NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
THE MOTHERS- BY JENNIFER GILMORE
I was recently commissioned by The New York Times to illustrate 'The Mothers' by Jennifer Gilmore. The book is about a woman who can't give birth and her struggles with the American adoption system. This was a very emotional subject matter to work with and I really wanted to capture the feeling of the book in the image without making it too morbid. At one point Gilmore mentions how as soon as she realises that she can't conceive, she starts noticing pregnant women everywhere. So I chose to show a woman separated from a scene in which everyone has a child.
This was such a satisfying commission to do... when you are given interesting, thought provoking subject matter, illustration is a very enjoyable job.
