I recently did an illustration for The Manual, which is a great magazine/book art directed by Jez Burrows. The whole magazine is limited to black and the blue spot colour.

Three beautiful, illustrated hardbound books a year, each holding six articles and six personal lessons that use the maturing of the discipline of web design as a starting point for deeper explorations of our work and who we are as designers.

The Manual captures the voices of our profession, both the well-known and the quietly working, as they bring clarity to the why of web design, share their visions, break our hearts, stretch our minds, and move us to deeper, smarter, richer work.

Each issue is an A5 (~6 × 8”) hardback book with a textured, handcrafted feel, and a bit over 100 pages of 120gsm Munken Pure stock within. Freedom Jonathan Franzen

Aaaaaaahhhhhh! This is probably the best book I’ve ever read. I had to sit in silence for about an hour after I finished reading it, and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks. The story is amazing and the narrative structure is ridiculous. PLEASE read it if you haven’t yet already. If it doesn’t break you, it will make you stronger.

Life Keith Richards

It must be fun being Keith Richards. I read this over the summer while I was on holiday in France. I didn’t have an iPod with me so I couldn’t listen to any of the songs mentioned while I was reading it, which was the most frustrating thing ever – when I got home I re-read it with an audio accompaniment. The stories are unbelievable (especially the Bobby Keys aeroplane one), the anecdotes about songwriting are engrossing (even though I know nothing about guitar), and it proves that Don Everly is the greatest ever rhythm guitarist – Keith mentions it about three times in the book. Made me want to pack it all in and go on tour.

What I Loved Siri Hustvedt

My mum always makes me lists of books that she has heard about on Radio 4 and this was on one of them. It took me a while to get round to reading it as I hated the cheesy painting on the cover so much. I love books that reference/criticise the art world. I’ve just finished the (relatively) new Geoff Dyer book where the first half is set at the Venice Biennale – it’s a sobering read too.

Apathy For The Devil Nick Kent

My friend lent this to me when I was raving about the Keith Richards book. Another music memoir about Kent’s life as an NME journalist, hanging out with Iggy Pop and David Bowie and briefly playing with the Sex Pistols. Normally books like this are really badly written, but this is Nick Kent so it’s a dream.

A Fraction Of The Whole Steve Toltz

A hilarious and very visual book about the relationship between father and son. This would be a dream to illustrate.

On wednesday I gave a talk about my practice to the second and third year Illustration and Graphic Design students at Brighton University.

After the talk I had the chance to meet the students and have a look at their work, which was very inspiring! Their degree show is going to be great.

I was recently commissioned to design these infographics for Google's Think Quarterly magazine. The article was about how google searches can predict the future! The first image is about shopping, the second is about house prices. This was the first time I have ever worked with infographics... it was a challenge!

R C A comic book workshop

I have just found these photos from a comic book workshop that I ran with Mike Redmond last year at the RCA. We provided people with 12 pages, each with a start and finish image already completed and they had to pass the sheets around adding one drawingn at a time... these then linked to form one long narrative. The result was very funny.

I've had a really nice week this week... I did a days teaching at Kingston with the third years on friday who are all just starting their final projects. And I am about to start working on a book for Duke Press which will be released this summer http://www.dukepress.co.uk/

I hand painted this vintage Ice Cream Van for the House Of Fairytales over the summer, but have never got round to putting up photos of it. The van tours round the festivals in the summer, selling ice cream and giving educational talks to children.
